Today I’m linking up with The B Bar to share some of my summer essentials. Charleston gets hot, hot, hot in the summer so most of my favorites (and necessities!) revolve around staying cool, caffeinated, and bug-free.
I have a hard time even thinking about how poorly I treated my skin when I was in high school. Tanning beds were a regular part of my beauty routine and I was also a lifeguard for a few years. My friends and I would often compete for being the tannest. Basically, I sucked at thinking about the long-term health of my skin.
Nowadays, sunscreen is my BFF. A little tan isn’t worth having a leathery face in the future. I’ve been using Cetaphil as my daily face moisturizer (with SPF) and then Neutrogena’s Beach Defense as a body sunscreen. I used to be a fan of Hawaiian Tropic sunscreens, but that brand has recently caused my skin to break out.
+ BUG SPRAY
No-see-ums might as well be considered the state insect of South Carolina. Well, I guess next to the palmetto bug. These itty-bitty, can’t even see-um mosquitos are the worst – especially during sunset and anywhere near a marsh. Bug spray grosses me out, but it’s worth avoiding hundreds of teeny, tiny bug bites.
+ ICED COFFEE
I can’t function without caffeine – or at least if I try to, it ends up being disastrous. Piping hot coffee just isn’t going to cut it in the summer; I need it cold and iced. My good ole standby is an iced americano, but every once in awhile I’ll shake things up with an iced latte or a standard iced coffee. Almond milk is key, too.
As soon as the temps starting hitting the 90s in Charleston, my outdoor time is significantly cut down during daylight hours. If for some reason I do need to go outside (and it’s not the beach or a boat), it crucial that I always walk on the shady side of the street. It might not be a huge difference, but the shaded side of the street can be a savior when it’s 3PM and I’m taking a walk to grab my afternoon iced coffee.
+ ROOFTOP BARS
Unlike the beach, there’s a serious lack of cool breezes in downtown Charleston. The best place to catch some cool air happens to be one of the best places to drink – rooftop bars. Rooftops are one of my favorite places to be on warm summer nights. Some Charleston favorites include: Stars, Vendue, and Pavillion.
Honorable Mentions: skirts and dresses, koozies, air conditioning, peaches, sandals, guacamole, and my trusty beach chair.
